"Blue Earth Area High School is committed to providing its students with exceptional learning opportunities that go beyond the confines of the traditional classroom." ~Julie Ackerman, BEAHS Science Teacher Once again, Mrs. Ackerman is off to the Bahamas with her students in the Tropical Ecology Course. Here is a little info about last year's experience, and what the students will learn this summer: 🐟The course offered an all-encompassing experience for the students, with each day filled with thrilling and educational activities. From snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, to observing undisturbed reef systems, to exploring a flank margin cave system, to doing a night snorkel which ended with a swim session with a huge green sea turtle, the students were immersed in the beauty and complexity of marine life each and every day of the week-long course. The trip wasn't just about sightseeing; it was about cultivating a scientific mindset. Through a series of daily excursions, the students were encouraged to make meaningful observations and ask scientific questions based on those observations. The young minds were trained to think critically, analyze data, and draw informed conclusions – skills that are essential for budding scientists. 🐠 🦑The students also learned lessons that extended beyond science. One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to witness a small island community in action. The students gained insight into how a tightly-knit community operates, supports each other, and adapts to the challenges of living on a remote island. Understanding the interdependence of the community members and their connection to the environment was an invaluable lesson that left a lasting impact on the students. This exposure fostered a sense of appreciation for diverse cultures and broadened their perspectives beyond the boundaries of Faribault County. For many students, this trip was their first time venturing far from home, and it opened their eyes to the wonders of the world beyond their immediate surroundings. The immersive experience helped them grow not only academically but also personally, fostering a sense of independence, resilience, and adaptability. What an AMAZING opportunity for our students! A standing ovation for our 2024 EDDY Award winner, Crystal Smith! The EDDY Award goes to a non-certified staff member at BEA Schools, nominated and voted for by all staff. Here is an excerpt from Crystal's glowing nomination: "(Crystal) is finishing her second year with us as an administrative assistant in the high school office, and has moved into this role so seamlessly. She is a go-getter, she juggles multiple things (constantly!), she is courageous, insightful, anticipates needs, and cares about kids. She isn't afraid to have courageous conversations with students or parents, and is a true team player. She clearly cares about doing her job and doing it well. I am so grateful for Crystal's presence with us at BEAHS, as she helps keep our ship afloat!" #beabucpride
