ELLs at BEA
Federal and Minnesota State Laws guarantee that all children will receive a quality education. English Language Learners (ELL) are students who either hear or speak another language in their home setting. BEA provides support to students with limited English proficiency through the district's English Learner program. The ELL Department works closely with the ELL students and classroom teachers to monitor progress in the areas of English language development: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The English Language Learner program in the Blue Earth Area School District started in 2003. We serve approximately 45 year round ELL students and roughly 20 migrant students every year, grades K-12. The primary language of our ELL/Migrant students is Spanish.
At all grade levels, ELL students are instructed with the same standards based curriculum as all other students at BEA. Curriculum in specific content areas may be modified with needed instructional strategies, yet concepts remain the same. All students are assisted in accessing their classroom curriculum
Federal and State Laws require annual English Language Assessments be given to ELL students. These assessments help guarantee that ELL students are making annual progress in English language development and that BEA is meeting the academic needs of all students.
